SENG Students Ventures For An Exclusive Visit to Singapore’s Construction Site!

Students from the School of Engineering, particularly from the Advanced Diploma in Construction Engineering (ADCE) & Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Management (PDEM), participated in a construction site visit to the Seletar North Link, where they were given the opportunity to observe and learn about real-world construction processes. The site visit provided valuable opportunities for students to bridge the gap between classroom theory and industry practice. The visit was facilitated by the Seletar site’s project manager, who gave our students an exclusive tour of the construction site.

One of the key areas of learning was project management. Students were introduced to how construction projects are coordinated on-site, including scheduling of work, allocation of manpower, coordination between subcontractors, and monitoring of progress to meet project timelines. They observed how site managers ensure that different work activities, such as demolition, piling, electrical installations, and structural works, are carefully sequenced to maintain efficiency and avoid delays. Students were also introduced to the concept of prefabricated construction, where building components are manufactured off-site and later transported to the construction site for installation. Quick on-site installations of prefabricated units allow improved efficiency, reduced construction time, and ensure consistent quality.

Students were also exposed to the technical aspects of demolition and piling works, which are essential stages in site preparation and foundation construction. They learned about controlled demolition methods used to safely remove existing structures while minimizing impact on surrounding areas. How piles are driven or bored deep into the ground with consideration of different ground conditions to create strong foundations that can support the weight of heavy structures and infrastructure.

Another important focus of the visit was construction site safety. Students observed the implementation of strict safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), safety signage, and designated safe zones within the construction area. Students were briefed on how risk assessments are conducted before work begins and how daily toolbox meetings are carried out to ensure all workers understand potential hazards and safety procedures.

The visit also highlighted electrical works and site planning. Students learned about electrical systems and power distribution, as well as operation and maintenance issues. Space planning and the arrangement of equipment, materials, and safe movement pathways within the site were also covered.

This construction site visit provided students with a highly immersive and practical learning experience. Seeing construction activities firsthand allowed them to better understand the complexities of engineering work, the coordination required across multiple disciplines, and the importance of safety and planning in construction projects. The experience reinforced classroom learning while giving students a deeper appreciation of professional practices within the construction industry.

A big THANK YOU to the team at Seletar North Link PPT Lodge 1B for this exclusive visit opened exclusively to our School of Engineering students.
