SAST Students Explores Contemporary Art at Singapore Art Week- Gillman Barracks
Students from the Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) BA (Hons) Graphic Design (Top-Up) programme, participated in a field trip to Gillman Barracks during the Singapore Art Week (SAW) period, where they visited 13 galleries located within the arts cluster.
This exposure allowed careful observation, open discussions, and thoughtful evaluation of ideas presented through various artistic mediums.
A key highlight was the exhibition at Art Outreach, which focused on city development and urban planning. Through visual narratives and spatial concepts, the exhibition offered valuable insights into how art engages with urban issues, directly complementing the students’ academic interests and enhancing their understanding of the arts and the built environment.
Beyond viewing artworks, students were challenged to think critically about the ideas and evidence presented, forming their own interpretations while considering different perspectives. Navigating multiple exhibitions also required focus and sustained engagement, as students moved through diverse themes and artistic expressions.
The field trip demonstrated the value of learning beyond the classroom, where direct experience, reflection, and discussion play a vital role in developing insight and understanding. By engaging with contemporary art in a real-world setting, where students gained meaningful perspectives that enrich both their academic journey and creative development.
