Learning by Doing: A Hands-On Experience in Chinese Calligraphy

Today, students from the School of Arts, Science and Technology, together with staff and teachers from Xuan Cheng Vocational & Technical College, took part in an immersive hands-on learning session that brought creativity, culture, and collaboration into one dynamic space at NIM. The experience moved beyond traditional classroom instruction, transforming the learning environment into an interactive classroom session where exploration and experimentation took centre stage.

The experience moved beyond traditional classroom instruction, placing students at the centre of the learning process. Working directly with physical materials, artefacts, and tools, participants were encouraged to experiment, explore, and refine their ideas through active engagement. The classroom was transformed into an interactive studio where learning happened through doing, observing, and sharing discoveries with peers.

Throughout the session, students relied on careful observation as they worked with various materials and processes. By focusing on what they could see, feel, and adjust, they developed a deeper understanding of technique and detail. This method helped sharpen their awareness of craftsmanship and highlighted the importance of precision in creative and technical work.

The hands-on nature of the activities also called for patience and persistence. Achieving the desired results often required repeated attempts, adjustments, and problem-solving. Rather than being discouraged by challenges, students embraced the process, learning that improvement often comes through trial, reflection, and steady effort.

At its core, the session was a strong example of experiential learning. Experiences like these demonstrate how practical engagement can enrich academic education. When students were given the opportunity to learn by doing, they developed a deeper connection to their artwork, a stronger sense of ownership over their progress, and skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
