NIM educates students on scam prevention

As our lives integrate more closely with online platforms, scam activities have surged, targeting individuals and institutions alike. Recognising the importance of proactive education, Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM) brought back the Anti-Scam & Crime Prevention talk. This talk aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to identify, avoid, and address potential scams both online and offline.representatives highlighted real-world examples of scams.

A valued resource panel member from the National Crime Prevention Council, Mr Lee Chee Chiew, representatives highlighted real-world examples of scams along with some statistics showing real-data scams across Singapore.

Key Elements of NIM’s Scam Prevention Activity today:

1. Understanding Common Scams

The talk begins by familiarising students with popular scam tactics such as phishing, investment, fake friend calls, job & e-commerce scams. Guest lectures from cybercrime experts and local authorities illustrate real-life scenarios and recent scam trends, making the content engaging and relevant.

2. Recognizing Red Flags

Students also learn how to spot “red flags” in digital interactions. Key tips include identifying suspicious email addresses, understanding deceptive language, and verifying the legitimacy of websites. NIM emphasises that scam detection starts with a cautious and informed approach.

3. Cyber Hygiene and Security Practices

Students are taught the essentials of cyber hygiene, including safe password practices, two-factor authentication, and securing personal devices with the help of ScamShield app. The goal is to instill habits that make students less susceptible to threats. Since social media and commerce platforms often serve as a prime channel for scams, the program also covers how to secure personal profiles and avoid oversharing sensitive information.

4. Empowering Students to Report and Respond

In the event of encountering a scam, NIM encourages students to take action through reporting and informing their peers. Students are introduced to reporting channels, both within NIM and at a national level, such as the Singapore Police Force’s Anti-Scam Helpline.

By promoting responsible reporting, NIM fosters a collaborative and alert campus culture. NIM continues to champion the well-being of its students, empowering them to make informed choices online and offline.
