More Than Just an Exchange: FPT University's 3-week Journey of Growth, Connection and Discovery at NIM

From the moment students from FPT University, Vietnam arrived in Singapore, Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM) extended a warm welcome, starting at the airport. The three-week programme began with airport pickup, ensuring a smooth and stress-free arrival, setting the tone for what would become a truly meaningful exchange.

Ms. Tanny, Deputy Director of Student Recruitment Admissions Team at NIM, waiting enthusiastically for the pick up.

Over the course of the programme, students were guided by Ms. Fitri and Ms. Nisa, whose lessons went far beyond traditional classroom learning. The curriculum explored a wide range of topics, including technology, relationships, art and creativity, personal development, alternative ways of travelling, navigating local transport, understanding customs and social behaviour, as well as reflections on hopes and ambitions, knowledge and learning, money awareness, and speaking and writing assessments.

These sessions encouraged students to think critically whilst expressing themselves confidently, and better understand both themselves and the world around them.

However, this programme was merely an exchange. The FPT Students formed genuine friendships with the students of NIM, proactively learning alongside them, sharing perspectives, and building cross-cultural connections that extended beyond lessons. One of the most memorable moments was when they joined the Christmas celebrations at NIM, where students experienced the warmth of the NIM community and the joy of celebrating together despite coming from different backgrounds.

Although the programme lasted only 3 weeks, it was incredibly fulfilling. Many students arrived feeling shy and reserved, unsure of what to expect. As the days passed, confidence grew, friendships formed, laughter became more frequent, and by the end of the programme, the students expressed how happy and comfortable they felt being at NIM.

“During the programme, I learned a lot about public speaking, communication, and expressing my ideas confidently. At first, I was quite shy and nervous when the teacher asked me to speak, but over time, I became more confident and stronger in answering questions and sharing my thoughts in English. The lessons were interactive and enjoyable, as the teachers combined learning with games and activities, which made it easier to understand and remember what we learned.”- One of the students quoted

“Outside the classroom, sightseeing was one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. I visited places like Gardens by the Bay, Marina Barrage, and Merlion Park, where I took many photos and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. I also appreciated the opportunity to explore museums instead of shopping malls, and to travel around the city easily using Singapore’s convenient transport system.” – Reflections from FPT university student

“Overall, this experience helped me improve my English, communication skills, and confidence when talking to others, including people from different cultures. Even though the programme lasted only three weeks, it was very fulfilling and memorable. I would rate this experience highly and would definitely come back to Singapore to study again if I had the chance.” – Insights from an FPT University Student.

This exchange was not just about learning in a new country; it was about personal growth, cultural understanding, and meaningful connections. It was a short journey in time, but one that left a lasting impact.

A special shoutout to Ms. Anita, Senior Manager of the Student Recruitment Team, for her thoughtful planning, warm hospitality, and engaging support throughout the students’ journey, and to lecturers, Ms. Nisa and Ms. Fitri, for their dedication in educating and creating a truly memorable experience for the students.
