Exploring Contemporary Art Beyond the Classroom
Students from the School of Arts, Science and Technology recently embarked on an educational visit to the Mizuma Gallery at Gillman Barracks, where they experienced between, arrangements, a contemporary art exhibition featuring works by several artists, including their lecturer, Ezzam Rahman.
Accompanied by Ezzam, students were given a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insights into the exhibition and the creative processes behind the artworks. Through guided discussions and observations, they explored how contemporary artists address themes of identity, memory, care, space, and the constant adaptations individuals make in response to everyday life.
The visit encouraged students to develop objectivity by analysing artworks through observation and critical inquiry, while considering diverse perspectives and interpretations. Engaging with the exhibition’s thought-provoking themes also required perseverance, as students reflected on complex artistic concepts and contemporary social issues presented through various artistic mediums.
Beyond the artworks themselves, students gained valuable exposure to professional artistic practices and the contemporary creative industry. This experience nurtured their ambition by broadening their understanding of potential career pathways within the arts and cultural sectors.
Most importantly, the visit reinforced the importance of learning beyond the classroom. Students developed a deeper appreciation for contemporary art, curatorial practice, and the role creativity plays in shaping conversations around social and cultural issues.
