SAST Students Visit Your MOTHER Gallery: A Journey into Alternative Art Spaces
Students from the School of Arts, Science & Technology (SAST) embarked on an inspiring visit to Your MOTHER gallery, one of Singapore’s most unconventional and artist-driven creative spaces. Nestled along Hindoo Road off Jalan Besar, the gallery offered students a glimpse into the thriving undercurrent of experimental art that pulses beneath the city’s polished surface.
Founded by artist Jeremy Hiah in 2004, Your MOTHER gallery was born from his European travels, where he encountered art in the most unexpected places—from abandoned apartments to bridges and bombed-out buildings. That spirit of raw creativity continues to shape the gallery today, where artists are given the freedom to push boundaries and reimagine how and where art can be experienced.
During the visit, Jeremy explained the basis of each artist’s work, with a diverse showcase of art of all media and by artists of all backgrounds
Students explored not just the artworks, but also the context in which the gallery exists. The eclectic neighbourhood surrounding the gallery—home to everyone from backpackers and vintage treasure hunters to long-time residents and hip creatives—provided a rich backdrop for reflection and discussion.
The visit left students with a deeper appreciation for the role of alternative art spaces in a city’s cultural fabric, and sparked meaningful conversations about creativity, community, and expression which would later accompany on building their ideation during classes.
