Engineering Enabler: SENG Students Explore
The Singapore City Gallery at the URA Centre

Bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world applications is one of the fundamental objectives that Nanyang Institute of Management’s School of Engineering (SENG) aspires to fulfill, and what better way to do this than through a field trip to the Singapore City Gallery at the URA Centre.

The visit was led by our engineering lecturers Mr Desmond Sim and Ms Thong. This was a trip that opened the eyes of students to the intricate world of urban planning and development—a cornerstone in the field of engineering.

The Singapore City Gallery, renowned for its comprehensive display of the city’s transformation and futuristic planning models, served as an ideal backdrop for our students to visualize the impact of engineering on societal progress. Through the interactive exhibits and meticulous modeling, the gallery showcased Singapore’s journey from a city-state to its current status as a global icon of sustainability and innovation.

Our lecturers navigated the students through the URA building, explaining the challenges Singapore faces, and the solutions we adopted to overcome them. The lecturers also shared personal experience from growing up in Singapore and having lived through and witnessed the development of these solutions. The tour was not just an educational outing but it also illustrated the pivotal role engineers play in shaping the world around us.

The visit to The URA Centre allowed students to connect classroom theories with tangible outcomes, highlighting the importance of sustainable urban planning and the innovative solutions engineers bring to the table. This field trip was a testament to SENG’s commitment to providing students with a holistic education, one that encompasses both the technical acumen and the vision to build better futures.

Reflecting on the visit, students shared their awe and appreciation for the meticulous planning and innovation that goes into urban development. It was an eye-opening experience that broadened their perspectives and reinforced their passion for engineering. They subsequently presented what they had seen at the gallery in a subsequent lesson, and this led to more discussion on what potential the future holds for aspiring engineers.

As Albert Einstein once said, ‘Engineers create that which has never been.’ The School of Engineering continues to seek to inspire and educate future engineers, to go beyond nurturing skilled professionals, and producing visionary leaders capable of crafting sustainable, innovative solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.
