Embracing Hari Raya: A Cultural Journey at
Nanyang Institute of Management
At Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM), we pride ourselves on fostering a vibrant and inclusive community where students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, grow, and celebrate cultural traditions. This Hari Raya, we were delighted to extend a warm welcome to our students, offering them a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Singaporean culture.
For many of our students hailing from overseas, Hari Raya represents more than just a festival; it’s an invaluable chance to delve deeper into the customs and traditions of their host country. Stepping into the festive spirit, we had Ms Rashida from School of Education to kick off the celebration, by giving a quick introduction of Hari Raya with the students before students get started at the different booths to participate in activities that are commonly seen during this occasion.
One of the highlights of our celebration was the hands-on experience of crafting ketupat (the ribbon version, of course), a traditional Malay rice cake wrapped in intricately woven palm leaves. Under the guidance of our staff and Muslim students, students relished the opportunity to learn the art of ketupat-making, discovering the meticulous craftsmanship behind this iconic dish.
Additionally, students indulged in the ancient art of henna painting, adorning their hands with intricate designs that symbolize blessings, beauty, and protection. The vibrant hues of henna served as a visual representation of the joy shared during this festive period.
We even included tudung and samping wearing for the students! For the ladies, donning the tudung—an elegant headscarf worn as a symbol of modesty and grace—provided a deeper understanding of the cultural significance attached to attire. Meanwhile, the gentlemen embraced the tradition of wearing sampeng, a traditional Malay garment worn around the waist, adding a touch of refinement to their attire.
Of course, no Hari Raya celebration would be complete without indulging in the gastronomic delights that define this festive season. Our students savored a delectable array of kueh (traditional Malay desserts) and satays, tantalizing their taste buds with the rich flavors and aromas of Malay cuisine.
As the festivities drew to a close, it was heartening to witness the bonds of friendship and mutual respect forged among our students, transcending cultural barriers and uniting them in the spirit of harmony and understanding. Through experiences like these, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a culturally diverse and inclusive learning environment at NIM.
In conclusion, our Hari Raya celebration was a testament to the beauty of cultural exchange and mutual appreciation. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Muslim students who generously volunteered their time and expertise, assisting promptly and ensuring the success of our festivities. By embracing the traditions of Hari Raya, our students not only gained a deeper understanding of Malay culture but also forged memories and friendships during their time at NIM.
