2023 'The Belt and Road' China(Zhejiang) ASEAN International Symposium on Fashion Design Education
On December 7, 2023, the ‘2023 Belt and Road China (Zhejiang)—ASEAN International Symposium on Fashion Design Education’ was inaugurated at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University’s Qiantang Campus. This event, organized by Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and co-hosted by Nanyang Institute of Management and Krirk University, aimed to share high-quality art and design educational resources internationally, discuss school management models, exchange educational philosophies, and foster the Silk Road spirit to advance regional fashion industry innovation collectively.

Wilson Ang, Vice President of Nanyang Institute of Management, was a keynote speaker at the conference. Liu Zheng, Dean of the International Fashion Technology College of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and Marangoni Fashion Design College welcomed the guests and expressed appreciation to the participating international educational institutions, leaders, and scholars.

Zhou Biyu, Vice President of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, highlighted the university’s strengths and unique features in design education. He stressed the importance of nurturing innovative and practical design talents, enhancing international exchanges, and building collaborative relationships among ASEAN countries through the Silk Road initiative.

Wilson Ang discussed Nanyang Institute of Management’s commitment to leading in higher education, offering industry-relevant courses through enterprise collaboration, and providing a progressive learning environment.

Pro. Dr. Jaran Maluleem, Vice President for Foreign Affairs at Krirk University, Advisor to the Prime Minister, and Vice Chairman of the Thai Islamic Committee, emphasized the significance of the Belt and Road initiative for China-ASEAN cooperative relations. He discussed its role in regional economic, social, and cultural exchanges and explored ways to strengthen China-ASEAN cooperation, including Thailand’s infrastructure projects.

The event marked the inauguration of the ‘China and ASEAN Art Discipline Research Center,’ a collaborative effort between Zhejiang Sci-Tech University and Krirk University, led by Vice Presidents Zhou Biyu and Jaran Maluleem. The organization is dedicated to deepening China-ASEAN art exchanges and mutual development.

Expert discussions were a highlight, with Professor Xiang Zhongping of Krirk University, Director Marini Yunita Tanzil of Siputra University’s Fashion Product Design and Business Department, Lecturer Sumaiya Shondhi of BGMEA Fashion Design University, and Professor Wu Qiaoying of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University sharing insights into fashion design trends and challenges. They provided valuable suggestions to the audience from different perspectives, analyzing hot issues and development trends in the fashion design industry.

In the afternoon session, Vice President Wilson Ang, Deputy Dean Liu Lixian, and Deputy Director Zhang Chao explored fashion design specialization and talent cultivation in China, Thailand, and Singapore, sharing diverse perspectives and practices to enhance education and talent development in the field.

The air was charged with a sense of accomplishment and anticipation as the symposium drew close. The event served as a platform for sharing knowledge and ideas and as a catalyst for future collaborations and innovations in the world of fashion design education. The diverse perspectives and insights shared by the speakers from China, ASEAN countries, and beyond had laid a foundation for continued dialogue and partnership. Establishing the ‘China and ASEAN Art Discipline Research Center’ was a testament to the commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and cooperation in the arts and design sectors across these regions.
