Fundamentals Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education

Accredited by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).

Course Objectives 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

Demonstrate basic understanding of child development theories when working with children;
Provide a warm, caring and responsive relationship in classroom management and supervision of children;
Assist in preparing and be involved in carrying out simple activities and learning experiences with children;
Gain knowledge on children’s health and nutritional requirements;
Carry out routine care, rituals and transitions; and
Appreciate their roles and responsibilities as a caregiver.

Course Structure 


Classroom hours: 120 hours

Practicum hours:  60 hours

Full-time:  3 months

Part-time: 5 months

Average Teacher-Student Ratio

The teacher-student ratio is 1:30.

The maximum allowed period for a student to complete this course is 1 year which takes effect from the commencement date of the course. Students who fail to complete the course within the stipulated period will not be entitled to any recourse or refund. For refund, please refer to  the Standard PEI Student Contract.

Mode of Delivery 

Students in their learning will go through different modes of instruction. These include classroom lectures using powerpoint slides, lecture handouts, group discussions and presentations, case studies, video viewing, role play and the use of information communication technologies etc.

NIM shall notify the student within three (3) working days upon knowledge of any of the following:

i.It does not commence the Course on the Course Commencement Date; or
ii.It terminates the Course before the Course Commencement Date.

NIM shall inform the student in writing of alternative study arrangements (if any).
NIM shall refund student according to the Refund Policy in the Standard PEI-Student Contract.
The waiting period for the commencement of course is 2 to 4 months depending on the course applied for.

Entry Requirements 

Completed Secondary 2
Pass in Secondary 2 English
Applicants should be at least 15 years of age at the time of application

Assessment & Awards


Students will be assessed based on case study, role play, projects, written report and essay, presentation, and practicum.


Upon successful completion of all modules, the student will be awarded the Fundamentals Certificate in Early Childhood Care and Education by Nanyang Institute of Management.

Practicum Facilitation

This course comprises of a practicum component that entails students’ attachment to a host centre for their supervised practice and supervision visits by a practicum supervisor. Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM) will facilitate in the arrangement and process of students’ attachment.
